BAND OF THE DAY: SMG

With one of those discographies that suggests Malaysian (sometimes) four-piece have a signed picture of Agathocles' Jan Frederickx pasted to the inside of their guitar case, SMG (Self Made God) have cranked out a staggering volume of splits, EPs and compilation appearances – literally too many to make counting them anything other than a serious commitment of time – and inevitably there's already one with Agathocles, and one with Japanese furies Unholy Grave on the way. The more splits you release, as the old grind proverb doesn't go, the higher the chance your next release will be with either Agathocles or Unholy Grave.

Formed in Shah Alam, fifteen miles west of Kuala Lumpur, in 1995, SMG play noisy, hardcore-dependant noise in the raucous, lo-fi mincecore mould – tackling the usual topics of socio-political xyz, scene policing and the odd blast of irreverent silliness to balance things out. It's difficult to know what's worth listening to, but these three splits seem to be up with their blessing.
